Ismailis

From: The Encyclopedia of Canada's Peoples/Ismailis/Milton Israel

The Ismaili community of Canada comprises immigrants from a range of countries, who trace their ancestral heritage to South Asia. While many have migrated directly from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the majority have arrived as part of a second migration from the East African states of Kenya, Uganda, and Zanzibar and Tanganyika (Tanzania). The community in Canada includes as well immigrants from other parts of Africa (Zaire, South Africa, Rwanda) and the Middle East (Egypt, Iran, and Syria). Still other Ismailis, with homelands in Africa and more distantly in India, have arrived as a result of a third migration from Europe and Britain.
