His book, Gebt der Wahrheit die Ehre, was trans- lated and published in The Canadian Mennonite. Abram Friesen (1919- ), born in Schonfeld, Ukraine. Immigrated to Canada in 1926. Attended school in Grunthal and Steinbach, Manitoba. 1935-1954, he worked on farms, in factories and printing shops. 1954-1958, he studied "Theaterwissenschaft" and German, English, and American literature in Goettingen and Mainz (Dr. phil, 1958). 1959- teaching and administrating positions at various Canadian and American universities. At present, Professor of German, University of New Brunswick. See Appendix IV for publications. Gerhard Friesen — Fritz Senn (1894- ), born in Halbstadt, Ukraine. His intention to become a teacher was foiled by World War I. 1924 he immigrated to Canada, attempted farming, but was more successful as a poet. Presently he is residing in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. See Appendix IV for publications. Heinrich D. Friesen (1880-1964), born in Orloff, Ukraine. A self- educated man, became a teacher. Immigrated to Canada in 1912. Settled in Herbert, Saskatchewan; farmed near Cadillac and taught school. Since 1937 he lived in Coaldale, Alberta. Heinrich Gorz (1890-1972), born in Schonsee, Ukraine. Immigrated to Canada in 1926. Teacher and preacher. In addition to a volume of poetry he published several historical monographs. Jacob H. Janzen (1878-1950), born in Steinbach, Ukraine. Attended the "Zentralschule" in Gnadenfeld, Ukraine. Obtained teacher's cer- tificate. 1913-1914 he studied in Jena and Greifswald, Germany. 1908-1921 teaching at the Mennonite school for girls in Tiege, Ukraine. In 1921 he lost this position because of his religious conviction. 1924 he immigrated to Canada, settling in Waterloo, Ontario. 1935-1937, in charge of a home for girls in Vancouver. 1944 he received an honorary doctorate from Bethel College, Kansas. For publications see Appendix IV. Peter J. Klassen (1889-1953), born in Ohrloff, Ukraine, grew up in Spat, Crimea. Obtained a broad education through disciplined self- education. Encouraged by his friend, Professor Hermann, University of Hamburg, he started to write. 1924-1925, teaching. 1925 he settled in Canada. 1928-1948, farmer and preacher near Superb, Saskatchewan. 1940-1952 he contributed regularly to Der Kinderbote, "Onkel Peters Ecke". For publications see Appendix IV. Gerhard Loewen (1868-1946), born in the Ukraine. Normal school in the Ukraine. 1886-1925 teaching at various schools and private homes in Russia. 1925 he immigrated to Canada. A volume of poetry, published in Canada, was preceded by several books published in Russia. Harry Loewen, was born in the Ukraine from where he moved as a refugee to Germany during World War II. In 1948 he immigrated to Canada. Studied in Manitoba and Ontario. M.A. in History, University of Manitoba, Ph.D. in German, University of Waterloo. Since 1968 on the 287
