Full text: 46 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ Church in this town in the Morning, and evening, and at Mahone Bay in the afternoon. Thursday, llth,—Went to Bridge water this morning to sell off the household Furniture &c of the Revd. J. H. Drumm by Auction. Tuesday, 16th,—The Halifax community as well as this community has been thrown into a state of great excitement in consequence of the Revd. Edmund Maturin, Minister of the Church of England and officiating in St. Paul's Church at Halifax, having quite suddenly, and most unexpect- edly renounced protestantism and embraced the Roman Catholic faith. It was evident to all who knew Mr. Maturin, that for some time past he has been labouring under a very unsound mind;—quite in a hurry and without even giving his family sufficient notice, he takes his departure in the Mail Steamer for England about four weeks ago, with intention, as many of his friends believed, of benefitting his health, when lo! and behold! the next Mail steamer brings the astounding news, that the Revd. Mr. Maturin has joined the Roman Catholic Church; had any other man done the same thing the surprise would not have been so great, for Mr. Maturin was continually holding up the errors of popery, to his hearers. By this change his family has been left altogether destitute; as no Minister can be received into the Romish Church who has a wife, he is obliged to abandon wife and family. Wednesd. 17th,—Married at the Episcopal Church, at Wolfville by the Revd. J. Storrs,38 on Wednesday, 10th inst, Henry A. N. Kaulbach, Bar- rister, of this place, to Eunice Sophia Harris of Lower Horton. The happy couple arrived here last evening after spending a few days at Chester. Sunday, 28th,—Revd. J. H. Drumm preached in the St. Johns Church in the evening, and read prayers in the morning. It is the intention of the Revd. Mr. Owen to visit England very shortly and will consequently be absent from four to six months from this parish; he has therefore retained the Revd. Mr. Drumm to officiate in his place untill his return. December, 1858 Sunday, 12th,—The brig "Clara Heckman" Henry Heckman master, which vessel put into this port about three months ago for the purpose of receiving repairs, having become leaky on her passage from Rotterdam to Boston, sailed this morning for her port of destination, having undergone necessary repairs. Tuesday, l^th,—Revd. Mr. Owen left for England this morning. "Time by moments steals away, "First the hour and then the day; "Small the daily loss appears, "Yet it soon amounts to years. "Thus another year has flown, "And is now no more our own.
