Full text: 14 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ Tuesd. 22nd,—Election day. The Town quite in an uproar. Geldert, Rynard, & Bailley successful, Candidates. Weather dull, & very cold; fi're requisite. Thurs. 24th,—Declaration Day; the above named persons declared duly elected. Rain this evening accompanied with some Thunder & Lightning the first this season. Sunday, 27th.—Peter Spearwater1* died at Mahone Bay very suddenly. Mond. 28th,—James McKeen drowned in Lehave river while in the act of bringing Hides from a Vessel just arrived from Halifax, he having over- loaded the boat, she sunk soon after leaving the Vessel; his son who was also in the boat was miracously saved. June 1855 Tuesday 5th,—Weather continues delightful. My plum trees in the Garden are full of blossoms. Sunday, 19th,—The funeral of David Hall's daughter took place to day, (Rosina Aged 10 years). The Scholars of the Sunday School, in connection with the Church of England, attended the funeral. Monday, 25th,—Up to this time the weather has been very unpropitious for the Grain Crop in consequence of dry weather. To day it rained very heavy all the afternoon, with thick fog. I sat on a jury of inquiry to day in the case of Lewis Hertle versus Charles Vieno, damages for plaintiff £68.12.6. Friday, 29th,—Very warm to day. Thermometer stood at 80' in my Shop. Rain in the Evening. July 1855 Wednes. llth,—To day Mr. Leonard Geldert12 closed his Boarding House in this Town, in consequence of his intended removal to Liverpool. This evening three of our young men, Edward Solomon,13 William Metzler, and John Pernette14 arrived via Halifax from Australia whither they had been seeking a fortune; whether they have been successful or not, is Known to themselves; they were three years absent. Sunday, 15th,—Mr. Gowe,15 Catechist of the Free Church of Scotland, expired this morning after a protracted & painful illness. Wednes. 18th,—The remains of Mr. Gowe were interred to day. The brigtn. "Boston Lady" from Chester bound to Boston, which put in here on Monday on account of fog, sails again to day.
